“A reassuring architect who brings dignity to everyday life”. This is how the jury of the Pritzker Prize has defined the winner of the 2024 edition, the Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto. An architect who throughout his career has tried to ensure that his projects reinforce the sense of community among the people who live there (neighbours, students, employees, pedestrians...).
Alejandro Aravena (Jury Chair and 2016 Pritzker Prize Laureate ),explains “One of the things we need most in the future of cities is to create conditions through architecture that multiply the opportunities for people to come together and interact. In this sense, the work of Yamamoto (Beijing, 1946) attempts to soften the frontier between public and private space.
Among Yamamoto's most important projects are the libraries, schools, museums and faculties that he has designed in countries such as Switzerland, Korea, Japan and China. Between them, Nagoya Zokei University (Nagoya, Japan, 2022), The Circle at Zurich Airport (Zurich, Switzerland, 2020) the Tianjin Library (Tianjin, China, 2012).
